Summary – Lively Review

GreatCall was one of the first medical alert systems to provide a mobile, waterproof GPS device, and they remain an industry leader today. They have solidified their spot on our list because their GreatCall Splash device has been updated to the new and improved Lively pendant.

Service for the Lively pendant is identical to the GreatCall Splash device, which means monthly payments start at just $19.99. A wide variety of unique services are available with this mobile GPS pendant that include smartphone apps, Bluetooth capabilities, medication assistance, and more. The Lively Mobile Urgent Response Device from GreatCall remains our number one choice for comprehensive, dependable, mobile protection at an affordable price. Read below for our detailed Lively (formerly GreatCall Splash) review.

Completely mobile and waterproof

Having a medical alert system is a great idea for every senior, but traditional in-home units aren’t necessarily the right choice for seniors who like to stay active. GreatCall offers a mobile GPS unit that is also waterproof!

It utilizes Verizon’s cellular network. Not only can you take it with you wherever you go, it’s also waterproof, so you can take it with you in the shower or to the pool and feel confident knowing that you’re still protected.

The newest device is even more mobile than the previous pendant because it is 35 percent smaller and weighs 20 percent less. It’s even easier to wear and carry with you.

  1. Buying experience

GreatCall Lively devices, gold and silverSigning up for service is extremely easy. By visiting the website, all you have to do is click “Buy Now” at the top of the page. You’ll first choose the plan that’s right for you. Then, you’ll insert your zip code to verify that there is coverage in your area.

You do have to buy the device separately, but that’s fairly easy as well. The device is automatically added to your order.

Don’t want to make your purchase online? You can always call and talk to a customer service representative. An especially convenient feature of Lively Alert is that their device and service plans are available in stores like Best Buy and Walmart so you can make your purchase in person!

  1. Equipment

Wear GreatCall Lively device on wrist or pendantGreatCall Splash was easy to set up, and so is Lively . There is no need to deal with a base unit and separate portable buttons. The Lively Alert unit is way easier to deal with because all you have to worry about is the GPS unit itself.

Each unit comes with a drop-in charger, so there are no cords to mess with. The only cord needed plugs directly into the wall.

One impressive upgrade with the newest GreatCall device is the fact that it’s even smaller than the GreatCall Splash. Lively measures in at 2.19 inches by 1.6 inches by 0.63 inches, making it 35 percent smaller. It weighs less too. It only weighs 1.41 ounces, which is 20 percent lighter than the Splash device.

The Lively even includes fall detection, making it an all-in-one device! It can keep a charge for up to four days, but it’s a good idea to charge the device each night to ensure continued coverage.

Want to add a little pizazz to your GPS unit? It can be ordered in both silver and gold! Additional accessories can also be purchased that include protective carrying cases, lanyards, and more.

Still have the GreatCall Splash? There’s no need to switch devices just yet. GreatCall still sells accessories for the Splash device on their website.

  1. Setup

Setup couldn’t be easier. Because Lively utilizes a cellular network, all you have to do is plug it into the wall! You just need the GPS unit and its charging cradle to enjoy 5star protection in emergency situations.

  1. Pricing and value

In addition to utilizing a dependable cellular network and easy-to-use equipment, Lively is also extremely affordable. There are three separate plans to choose from that start at just $19.99 a month, which is even more affordable than most traditional medical alert systems!

Even their most comprehensive plan only costs $34.99 a month. However, there is a one-time equipment fee of $49.99 for the GPS device. Unfortunately, there may also be an activation fee.

If you keep your eyes open, you’ll enjoy special discounts and deals. GreatCall will sometimes reduce or eliminate activation fees.

  1. Service

GreatCall Lively, conntect to nurse or doctor 24/7One of the best features of the GreatCall Splash was its ability to connect with 5star service. The new and improved Lively is no different. From medical emergencies to home intrusions and more, all you have to do is push the emergency button and you’ll be connected with a Medical Alert Agent.

If you’d like more comprehensive protection, additional services are available. They also offer a service called Urgent Care that provides you with 24/7 access to registered nurses and board certified doctors.

Fall detection is available with their Ultimate Plan, but what made GreatCall Splash truly unique was their GreatCall Link service. It is a smartphone app that can keep caregivers informed of the health and safety of their loved ones 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This feature is also found with the Lively pendant. However, Lively takes things one step further. It includes Bluetooth capabilities.

Currently, there are no applications for this unique new feature, but in the future, the device could capture data from an activity band. The data could then be integrated into a daily health profile on the GreatCall Link App to be shared with caregivers.

There is a wide variety of additional services that include MedCoach, Wellness Calls, My Calendar, and more that are all outlined on their website.

I have ordered this for my mother. Now I am concerned that it has to be charged every day. So while it is charging it can’t be worn?
    This seem dangerous .

    Hi Deborah,

Please don’t be concerned with the GreatCall Splash device regarding the charging process. The battery life on the device is about 4 days, but GreatCall does recommend you charge it daily to ensure the battery remains at a strong capacity level. When the battery life reaches less than a 50% level, it will automatically notify you.

The Customer Care folks at GreatCall recommend you place the charging cradle on your nightstand and charge the Splash device when you’re ready to go to bed. Keep in mind, the device is still active and working even while it is charging. If you need to get out of bed, you simply take the device with you.

It only takes 30-60 minutes to fully charge the device. Plus, the device will automatically announce “Fully Charged” when it has reached its full charging level.

If you’re ever concerned if the device is still working while it’s charging, you can make a quick test call with the device.

    Hope this helps.

Considering getting this for our father, but have concerns about the coverage in his area. He lives in the north eastern part of Michigan’s lower peninsula where cell coverage is spotty. At his house we get almost no coverage in the house and only 1 – 2 bars outside. It doesn’t matter which carrier. He also has 2 metal pole barns that he spends a lot of time in with no cell reception while in them. Is the reception on these units any better than cell phone reception?

Bob – I’m glad you’re doing your research to find the right medical alert solution that will meet your father’s needs. You’re absolutely right that good cellular reception is a requirement in order for the GreatCall Splash or Lively Alert to work accordingly. GreatCall utilizes Verizon’s cellular network, which is known to have the best cellular coverage among all the cellular providers. It’s best you first confirm Verizon provides reasonable coverage for your father’s area before purchasing the medical alert device.

Elaine – Regarding your inquiry if GreatCall will charge an activation fee for an upgrade (as an existing customer), I can tell you that medical alert companies will often waive activation fees during their promotional periods. Since medical alert systems are a monthly subscription service, these companies never want to lose a customer. So, when you contact GreatCall at 1-866-356-0314, be sure to ask them if they will waive the activation fee if you upgrade. Let us know how it goes!
